About us - Cross Sector Skills

The six cross sector National Standard Setting Bodies, have agreed to work together to:

provide a solution for Government to address cross sector skills in a co-ordinated, efficient and cost effective manner

proactively complement and support existing policy, funding and regulatory bodies and agencies

provide a simplified process through one point of access to cross sectoral issues and representatives

gain a higher profile for cross sector skills in accordance with their vital importance to UK plc

protect and develop the quality of the standards which promote these essential business skills

promote and increase the understanding of cross sector skills across the four nations.

The critical importance of developing and maintaining a cross-sectoral approach to national standards is highlighted by the facts that:

Most individuals will now have five different careers in their working lives – one in three will be self employed. Cross sector skills are truly transferable business skills and should form the foundation upon which sectoral skills are built

Cross sector skills are essential for the development of the 14-19 vocational reforms, taking learners from school into FE/HE and then into work

Every UK business requires cross sector skills – but a lot of businesses do not have them. The essential cross sector skills business needs are not being adequately catered for at a strategic level. This needs to be addressed immediately if a demand-led system is to be effectively implemented, in order to boost productivity and professionalism
