Welcome to our final eBriefing of 2009, this December.
Thanks to everyone who took part in our successful Conference 2009 last month – it was wonderful to see so many of our partners, stakeholders and learning providers in Nottingham. We’re in the process of analysing your feedback on the event and will report back to you in January.
As the festive season is now upon us, we’ll keep it short and sweet this month – with our final instalment in our series on apprentices, featuring a Question and Answer session with Joanna Wiczak, Business & Administration apprentice at Merseytravel, who also spoke to Gordon Brown at the TUC Congress in September.
And once more, we need your help with a new Business Contingency Planning project that is currently underway at the CfA.
So until January, keep in touch and we wish you a peaceful, happy and relaxing December.
If you would like to comment on any of these stories or have a feature of your own to contribute, please contact Helen Gerlach.
If you know somebody who would like to receive our eBriefings, please pass it on or ask them to contact us with their email address. To subscribe to the CfA eBriefing, please email Helen Gerlach.
Emergency! Business Contingency Planning
Are you involved in Business Contingency Planning or work for a Small/Medium Enterprise (SME) and have to assist with or outline an Emergency Plan at operational and strategic level?
Have you ever considered how your business will function if hit by a disaster?
Or ever thought about the consequences of a catastrophe and how it would impact on your organisation?
Do you know how to identify the most significant risks and what to do to minimise the disruption?
The cause of a disaster or catastrophe does not always have to be related to bad weather conditions, a fire or even a terrorist attack. Often it can be the small and unassuming factors that can have a disastrous impact on your business. In this economic climate it's vital now more than ever to protect your business from such incidents.
To help SMEs with their contingency planning, the CfA is working on a project to develop specific National Occupational Standards (NOS). These NOS are especially designed for SMEs, to provide them with relevant skills in terms of Resilience, Business Continuity and Disaster Planning.
During early January, we will commission a research consultancy to carry out a survey on our behalf.
It will identify the functions that administrators need at operational as well as strategic level to understand their business and the potential risks at each different level.
If you would like to participate in this consultation or in the Focus Group on 7th January please contact Uta Sempf.
Joanna Wiczak – Business & Administration apprentice with Merseytravel Continuing with our series on apprentices and apprenticeships, I spoke to Joanna Wiczak – Business & Administration apprentice and Union Learning Representative at Merseytravel (first featured in our TUC Congress item in October’s eBriefing) about her apprenticeship at Merseytravel and her future plans:
Joanna, 22, from Poznan, Poland has been in the UK for three years, having finished school after the equivalent of her ‘A’ levels. Now one year into a two year Business & Administration apprenticeship, Joanna is based at the Merseytravel headquarters in the heart of Liverpool.
HG: “Getting started Joanna, what made you think of taking up an apprenticeship? JW: Well, I hadstarted working in the catering industry when I first came over here, but didn’t really see my future there and my heart wasn’t in it to be honest – working with food and in the kitchens was not really ‘me’. It was when I was thinking of going back home that I saw this particular Merseytravel apprenticeship advertised through Connexions and decided to apply for it.
HG: How did the application process work? JW: I had to complete a standard form asking for the usual qualifications and previous work experience. Then out of a total of 90 applicants, 16 were selected to go forward for interview, with just five of us being recruited.

As you know, we’re keen to keep our content up-to-date and in line with what’s happening for apprentices in the area of Business & Administration. To make sure that we do this, we need you to contact us with your apprenticeship stories. In return, we’ll turn them into a Case Study and feature you and the company you are training with, on our website!
So, get your thinking caps on, tell all your contacts who are completing Business & Administration apprenticeships about us and email us now to find out what happens next or call us on 020 7091 9620 directly.
Apprenticeship Week 2010 will be held from 1st–5th February 2010 to celebrate the multitude of talents and skills of apprentices from right the way across England. There will be apprentices, employers, providers and all those involved with Apprenticeship programmes joining together to celebrate the enormous value that apprentices bring to their companies and communities.
Throughout Apprenticeship Week, both national and regional activities will be taking place with each day having a different focus. Following the success of last year’s Apprenticeship Week, activities in 2010 will include employer events, job swaps, breakfast briefings and apprentice challenges.
Apprenticeship Week 2010 will demonstrate the huge advantages of employing and supporting apprentices in the workplace, and showing the wide range of Apprenticeships available in different sectors.
The Business Skills qualifications, available on the new Qualifications and Credit Framework, are attracting growing interest among employers. OCR's customers are reporting that the qualifications are ideal for anyone in a business environment who is required to multi-task. With this in mind, we are working closely with the CfA, other awarding body colleagues and our own customers to refresh the suite ready for an August 2010 launch.
We will be consulting customers further in the New Year to ensure OCR's offer fits the profile of today's business professional. If you are interested in providing comments and ideas for the redevelopment of OCR's qualifications please contact our Qualification Manager, Leila Fleming, by email leila.fleming@ocr.org.uk or by phone 024 7649 6477.
