Calling all YA partnerships

If you are a YA partnership and have not yet requested information leaflets for Employers, Pupils and Parents/Guardians, please get in touch.

Also, progression leaflets are available for all cohort 2 pupils who are looking for ideas about that vital next step. These leaflets are also useful for all pupils considering or currently working towards a Young Apprenticeship.

To request leaflets, please contact Sara Vanderheld, your new CfA YA liaison.

Employers have your say

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to 'have your say' about the knowledge and skills young people should acquire, as part of the new Public Services diploma.

If you are keen to have your say on the new Public Services diploma content, click on the link below and fill out the questionnaire.  The questionnaire will be available until Tuesday 14th August.  Once you have completed it, please feel free to forward the link to friends and colleagues who may be interested to contribute. It is important that this diploma really meets employers’ needs.

NEW ASET NVQs in Business & Administration Levels 1 - 4

Awarding body ASET is pleased to announce the newly accredited NVQs in Business & Administration at Levels 1 – 4, based on the revised Business & Administration standards set in April 2007.

ASET is recognised in the UK by the relevant government department and agencies.  More than 3,000 learning programmes are delivered every year in the UK by over 650 ASET Licensed Centres including FE colleges, employers and training companies. ASET offers first class customer service and our systems and processes are modern and user friendly.

The NVQs in Business & Administration are competitively priced, the combined fee per learner is: £52 for Level 1, £56 for Level 2, £72 for Level 3, and £100 for Level 4.

Existing ASET Licensed Centres just need to complete the relevant form to offer the NVQs; other organisations must first apply to become an ASET licensed centre which is a straightforward process. Full details of the above and other programmes offered by ASET may be found at www.aset.ac.uk, or you can call Jan or Helen on 0845 3451 857 who would be happy to arrange for one of their regional team to visit you and answer any queries.

2007 Test & Trials projects

This year, CfA is leading on two Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) Test and Trials projects.

Project 1: Testing and Trialling a Cross-Sector Qualification Matrix
Cross-sector business skills underpin operations in all sectors and every category of organisations in the UK. The QCF Test and Trial for a Cross-Sector Qualification Matrix aims to provide an opportunity for several cross sector organisations to work together to launch and evaluate a competence-based, flexible qualification programme for level 2 and 3 learners in:

- Business & Administration
- Customer Service
- Health & Safety
- Management
- Marketing & Sales

Many cross sector standards are currently used as common units by many Sector Skills Councils. Therefore, the partners involved in this project believe that this pilot project is essential in influencing the qualification reform process.

Trials will take place in England, Wales and Northern Ireland from summer 2007 until spring 2008.

Project 2: Testing and Trialling the Business & Administration Apprenticeship as a Qualification

The CfA will be piloting a Business & Administration Apprenticeship framework as a qualification in its own right. This pilot will be carried out in England only.

If you are a City & Guilds, EDI or OCR centre and are interested in one or both of the above trials please contact Kerrie Fuller on 020 7091 9620.

Unit 334: Provide Administrative Support in Schools, has been developed to address specialist Business & Administration skills needs within the education sector.

Question of the month

Q:Some text processing units have words per minute requirements and others do not, why is this?

A: During the Incremental Change process, employers fed back that for certain roles such as legal and medical secretaries (who use audio text processing or shorthand text processing) that wpm were essential in establishing competence in this area. For other administration roles where typing text from notes was more common (such as typing up minutes of a meeting from notes) that accuracy rather than speed was more important and so the requirement for words per minute was removed.
