What does GOOD look like?

Events

With the March 'What does GOOD look like?' events coming to an end, we'd like to thank all those who attended for making it such a success. Birmingham, Leeds and London have all been and gone with Edinburgh still to come on Tuesday.

Leeds in particular was over-subscribed so if you missed your chance to attend these events this time around but would like to attend in the future please let us know as we would like to offer these events to those who missed out. Please contact Tennille Balaz and let her know that you would like the chance to attend again and in which area of the UK you would prefer.

We have had some really positive feedback over the last couple of weeks and we'd just like to share two comments with you.

An excellent opportunity to network with other assessors. Margaret Barkway, as usual, knows her stuff!

An excellent day providing food for thought

The workshop is a great opportunity to build on what you learnt at earlier assessor and IV master classes.  If you attended earlier master classes or you are attending a CfA event for the first time, What does ‘good’ look like? will maximise your performance as an assessor and streamline the process of building a complete and effective learner portfolio.

To find out more please click on the link below and we hope to see you at an event soon.

ePortfolio Questionnaire

ePortfolios are designed to do away with cumbersome, time consuming and expensive paper portfolios. We all know about have to measure candidates' portfolios in feet as the A4 folders pile up in front of you.

You will know that at the CfA we have offered forward ePortfolio PLUS as our own ePortfolio solution for the past three years or so. Recently, in response the the Government's 'World Class Apprenticeships' report and with training providers looking at technology more and more we have seen a rise in interest in ePortfolios.

As we are three years down the track we would like to see how attitudes have changed to the technology and see how many of you out there use the various systems available and how. Alternatively, you may not use an ePortfolio system so please tell us why not?

We have designed a short online survey which we appreciate you taking a few minutes to fill in. At the end there is the option to add yourself to our mailing list if you currently do not receive the eBriefing directly.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to complete the questionnaire. If you would like any further information regarding ePortfolios then please contact Richard Jane on 020 7091 9629.

Important changes to the Apprenticeship Certification process for England & Wales

As you will be aware, the CfA has not increased prices for Apprenticeship certification in over 5 years. Due to increased overheads and supplier costs we are having to increase the price for using the paper-based application forms in England & Wales to £35.00 per certificate from 1 April 2008.

Our online certification process allows us to respond more efficiently to certificate requests, so we are freezing the price for requests received online at £30.00. I would therefore encourage you to use the online system in order to maintain your costs at their current level.

The online system is fast and easy to use, and registration is free. As well as this, we are all making a concerted effort to reduce the carbon footprint of processing all of our certificate applications in line with the new sustainability elements of our standards.

Please let us know if you would like us to set you up with an account and send you our 'how to' guide. Please reply to Nishta Naik with your contact details.

City and Guilds Levels 2 & 3 Diplomas in Business and Administration

The City and Guilds Levels 2 and 3 Diplomas in Business Administration have been approved as proxies for the City and Guilds Levels 2 and 3 Certificates in Administration within the Administration Apprenticeship Frameworks.

The Diplomas can now be used as achievement of the Technical Certificate element of the Business Administration Apprenticeship and Advanced Apprenticeship.

Question of the Month

The full list of activities required at Level 2 for ‘sending and receiving e-mails’ in Using IT to Exchange Information is:

  • Using basic send commands, such as send to individuals, send carbon copies
  • Using basic reply commands, such as receive, forward, reply to individuals, reply to all and reply with history
  • Deleting e-mail
  • Sending and opening e-mails with attachments
  • Saving attachments to appropriate places
  • Finding e-mails
  • Following any rules and guidelines for sending and replying to emails
  • Using more advanced facilities, such as add a signature or set the priority of messages
  • Sending messages to groups of people using groups set up in an address book
  • Sending and receiving instant messages with and without attachmentsCompressing messages on sending and un-compress messages that have been received
  • Archiving e-mails where necessary, such as by using folders and subfolders

It is only the instant messaging one element that should be ignored. The CfA version of the unit compresses these but the whole list should be covered.

Review of NOS for Notice Processing

To help ensure that those involved in notice processing are competent and skilled employees, the CfA and British Parking Association (BPA) are working together to review and update the national occupational standards (NOS) for these colleagues, this will ultimately lead to improved training and recognised qualifications.

The BPA is the largest Professional Association in Europe representing organisations in the Parking and Traffic Management Industry. These organisations are many and varied, and include: Manufacturers, Car Park operators, Local Authorities, Health Authorities, Airports, Railways, Shopping Centres, Theme Parks, Consultants, in fact anyone involved in the construction, management and enforcement of Parking and in the wider Traffic Management Industry. As the recognised authority within the parking industry, the BPA represents, promotes and influences the best interests of the parking and traffic management sectors throughout the UK and Europe. The BPA and CfA have worked together for more than five years on the development of parking administration specialist standards and qualification pathways.

The BPA is now looking to review and update the existing notice processing NOS. This work will be an important part of the solution to the challenges that face the parking sector.

If you would like to be involved in the notice processing NOS development please contact Sara Vanderheld at the CfA on 020 7091 9626 or Rocky Datoo at the BPA on 01444 44 73 12.
