How are they used?

The Standard’s primary focus is to help individuals in the workplace to do their job effectively and to ultimately increase workforce skills across the UK . They exist as a benchmark for occupational quality.

General uses:

  • Promotion of good practice within the workplace

  • Defining occupational competence

  • Assisting managers with workforce management and quality control

  • Providing a framework for training and development

  • Providing base for a range of Vocational Qualifications such as NVQs and SVQs.

Individual uses:

  • Using them as a gateway to other vocational or higher educational courses

  • Achieving Vocational Qualifications such as NVQs and SVQs

  • Assessing own skills, knowledge and understanding

  • Identifying own training and development needs

Training providers, awarding & regulatory bodies uses:

  • Approving training and vocational qualifications

  • Developing new training and qualifications

  • Identifying gaps in training and development provisions

Employers, organisations and business uses:

  • Describe the skills they need in their workforce

  • Assess the skills already in the workforce

  • Develop training and recruitment plans to fill any identified gaps and shortages

  • Use as the basis for setting objectives in performance and appraisal

  • Form the basis of job descriptions

  • Assist with staff retention
