About the sectors
Marketing and Sales are actually two separate sectors, but are commonly linked together due to the overlapping nature of their functions and a perceived merging of responsibilities in many organisations and job roles.
The sectors are vitally important to both public and the private sector, with marketing of public sector work and sales of public sector products forming an important aspect of the sectors overall makeup, despite the common perception that marketing and sales is an exclusively private sector activity.
The size of the sectors is difficult to measure accurately, but it is estimated that there are some 2.5 million people involved in sales and related roles, although a number of these individuals will be in predominantly customer service related roles.
As with customer service, marketing and sales skills will play a vital role in the run up to the 2012 Olympics, with the need for skilled marketing and sales professionals becoming increasingly important.
